Helping the Environment

We are sensitive to environmental issues and take seriously our responsibility to preserve the environment by implementing practices that conserve energy, water, and fuel, and reduce industrial waste.

Energy Conservation

• In 1998, Purdue purchased its current headquarters building in Stamford, Connecticut. Renovation of the 500,000-square-foot building resulted in reduction of annual electric consumption by 44%, saving 8 million kilowatt-hours of electricity per year—enough to power approximately 1,300 homes each year.
• In 2005, Purdue received Connecticut Governor Jodi Rell’s Gold Award for energy conservation and Stamford, Connecticut’s first-ever Mayor’s Award for Environmental Awareness.
• Since moving into our headquarters building in 2000, we have saved the equivalent of 2.2 million gallons of fuel oil.
• In our Wilson, North Carolina, manufacturing plant, we recover water used in the manufacturing process for use in cooling towers and landscape irrigation systems.
• In our Cranbury, New Jersey, Discovery Research Laboratory, we have implemented operational efficiencies and reduced laboratory airflow.
• In our Totowa, New Jersey, manufacturing plant, we have developed a plan to improve overall operational efficiency and participate in the local utility’s load-shedding program.

Transportation

• Purdue’s award-winning Commuter Option program eliminates approximately 1.3 million pounds of carbon monoxide a year. The company has received the Silver Connecticut Innovation Award from the Connecticut Quality Improvement Award Partnership and the “Best Workplaces for Commuters” award from the Environmental Protection Agency for this initiative.
• One-third of our corporate headquarters population participates in the
  Commuter Option.
• The comprehensive program includes full reimbursement for the first $100 spent on public transportation each month plus a generous allowance for parking at the home end, shuttle service between headquarters and the Metro Center, and a Guaranteed Ride Home Program.
• The company has been an active Board member of MetroPool Inc. for the past
  nine years.
• Our Corporate Fleet continues to offer vehicles that achieve better gas mileage, and employees are incentivized to select more fuel-efficient vehicles.

Waste and Hazardous Waste Disposal

• All laboratory and manufacturing processes are engineered and inventories managed at a level consistent with producing the minimum of hazardous waste that is disposed of through environmentally responsible methods.
• Purdue recycles paper, bottles/cans, waste oil, and electronics.
• Our Information Technology group works with Converge’s IT Asset Disposition group to ensure that zero computer-generated waste finds its way to domestic landfills or ethical third-party exporters.
